8/18/2024 - The Cabinet Secretary, Police Meeting and Mombasa.

After returning to Nairobi, we had the opportunity to attend a reception for one of the newly appointed government Cabinet Secretaries (CS). After the protests here, President Ruto dismissing his cabinet and appointing new people to the positions there is a calmness for the time being.  The newly appointed were installed and each had their own reception and acceptance ceremonies with their constitutes.  This CS is from the area that Enos grew-up. This was held at one of his residences in the Nairobi area.

When we were in the village, we visited the local police station and found out that they don’t have any vehicles. The poverty rate in Kenya is 14%, in Kakamega County, where the village is located, is 51%.  When we got back to Nairobi, we visited with a federal police official and Enos made the request for a vehicle for the village.  The official gave him the formal process and we await the outcome.

One of the items we need for our ministry in the village is a vehicle.  This has proven to be more difficult than we first thought.  The roads are very rough in much of the area and requires a vehicle that can withstand the test! It’s very common to hear the car bottom out on the speed bumps and potholes even at a very slow speed.  We took the 6-hour train ride to Mombasa, an island off the coast to look at vehicles.  We were told they are less expensive there because of the port of entry.  The cost was a surprise to us.  We didn’t purchase yet.  We’re praying for the vehicle God has for us. We know it’s out there, in His timing.  While in Mombasa we got around in Ubers and Tuk-Tuks.  Tuk-Tuks are vehicles that transport up to 3 people.  We managed to squeeze in for the cozy ride. We toured the city and visited the beach, what lovely views!

We had some wonderful Uber drivers that had great knowledge of the area and provided a lot of information.  One trip we took a ferry to Likoni on the south coast. Our driver explained that this area is very inexpensive compared to Mombasa. Mombasa is close to the borders of Tanzania and Somalia, thus the large Muslim influence.

Three days later we returned to Nairobi via train.  The train runs through the Kenyan wildlife preserve.  We saw several elephants.  The train windows were cloudy, but I tried to get a picture.

This weekend there were many events surrounding the AFC Leopards soccer club. A fan fest on Saturday and team building on Sunday.  Enos is very involved with the team and the leadership and had to be present.

The upcoming week we will travel back to the village. Most of the work in the house will be complete.  We’re looking forward to what God has in store for us!
